Do you have an unconscious bias for or against black people?

Do you have an unconscious bias for or against black people?

A majority of Americans (including, in many cases, African Americans) show an automatic preference for white people, according to an ongoing study of unconscious attitudes. About 50% of the black people who take the Implicit Association Test (IAT), which measures implicit attitudes and beliefs, show an automatic pro-white bias and about 50% show a pro-black bias. The study's researchers suggest that automatic white preference reflects "an attitude that is learned through experience in a culture that does not regard Black Americans highly."

As a community, we've come a long way, but we've still got a lot of work to do. Too many people, including African Americans, continue to harbor unconscious negative feelings and attitudes about black people. At the root of these negative feelings is the myth of black inferiority, introduced centuries ago to justify the enslavement and subjugation of Black people.

It's time for us to unburden ourselves.  It's time for us to confront and work to overcome the myth of Black inferiority.

Community Healing Days are three days set aside each year (on the third weekend of October) to celebrate healing for black people and to work on overcoming the myths that keep us from reaching our full potential.

The Community Healing Days movement began last year led by people in New Haven, Connecticut, who were joined by people in Montclair, New Jersey and Tuskegee, Alabama. This year, people in at least a dozen will be celebrating on Friday through Saturday, October 16-18.
